TOKYO (Reuters) – After more than three centuries in business, the Onuma department store in northern Japanese city of Yamagata began bankruptcy proceedings this year – one of many distinguished department stores across the country in dire straits.

A predilection toward shopping for apparel online is still a thing, according to Coresight Research — and the proof is in the data gathered for its latest weekly U.S. consumer survey.

In spite of excitement surrounding the reopening of brick-and-mortar stores after temporary closures due to the coronavirus pandemic, online apparel shopping has “maintained its appeal,” according to Coresight Research. “We are yet to see a downward trend in online apparel shopping,” the firm said.

Is your GNC closing? Retailer releases list of first stores to shutter in bankruptcy. See the list.

GNC Holdings Inc., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late Tuesday, has released an initial list of stores that will close.

The list posted at the Pittsburgh-based chain’s site, GNCevolution.com, includes 248 closing stores, including 219 U.S. locations and 29 in Canada.

As part of the bankruptcy, the health and wellness retailer said it plans to “accelerate the closure of at least 800 to 1,200 stores.” Many of the closures were previously announced and the liquidation started, the retailer said.
